Legalization of Drugs
Recently,
the “legalization” of drugs has been taken into consideration seriously more seriously
than ever. It was not considered as a bad habit when it was first introduced to
the public. However, in time, it has been understood that drugs are malicious
for not only health but also for social affairs in any country. Individually,
there are lots of thoughts about this issue. However, I believe that drugs must
be allowed in every country, for anyone who wants to use them can reach it somehow.
Legalization only eases the pain of controlling the distribution.
The first
reason I believe is that drugs, when controlled by the government, can bring a
big fortune to any country. Just like tobacco and alcohol, it will only be
taxed. Some researchers made experiments on this issue and it is revealed that governments
can profit approximately 8 million dollar per year. (Chambliss, 1994) In this
way, authorities can decrease their economic burdens. Namely, without investment or else, governments can
provide a more comfortable life for citizens. Also, by doing this, people
in charge can supply more demands of the society, which leads a deep welfare. There
are also many ways to save money but, at least, legalization of drug may
improve the economical states of all governments.
Another
reason is crime rate in the field of illegal drugs. Drug dealers are killing,
harming and ruining other people’s lives every day, since their job is illegal
and they think themselves someone like terrorists. When drugs are tied to a
law, they will become normal people. This way, crime rates will be reduced to
some extent. I mean, if the streets are full of normal people, there is nothing
wrong. However, if streets are full of abnormal people who look like normal,
there occurs something wrong.
Many people
think that drugs can hurt people’s moral beliefs. They think that it is safer
when drugs are prohibited. From an ethical standpoint, if drugs were legalized,
there would be a dramatic decline in domestic affairs in every country around
the world. According to them, it is very dangerous being in a society in which
drug users can legally roam. However, most underground lords will be overturned
if the government were to take the control of all the drugs. That is why, drugs
should not be prohibited. To illustrate, the legalization of marijuana in
Netherland reduced the crime rate and created a safer society. (www.bbc.com)
To sum up, all reasons above are enough for thinking that legalization of an illegal issue can cause positive consequences more than negative ones. "We're not really going to get anywhere until we can take the criminality out of the drug business and the incentives for criminality out of it." Said George P. Schultz, an economist in the U.S.A. This saying lays everything on the ground obviously.
